Mavs May Update
May was another busy busy month for the Mavs with EMMNA league matches, tournaments, social league and much more besides. Here we go with another round-up of what’s been going on…
Mavs Men took on Norfolk United in the EMMNA National League and it was quite the match! Mavs went out well then Roos showed their class and held a really healthy lead by half-time. However, the Mavs switched it on in quarter three and worked hard to bring the scoreline closer. The comeback continued in the final quarter and with just seconds to go, the scoreline was even. Mavs were awarded a penalty, just inside the circle as the final hooter sounded and Joe White stepped up. With everyone holding their breath, the ball swished through the net and the Mavs took the win. What a game!
The next weekend, the Mavs were back in action. This time, two mixed teams headed to Basingstoke to take part in Tongham Netball Club’s Margaret Mann Medley. Facing fellow EMMNA teams such as Army and Surrey Hurricanes plus a number of really strong mixed clubs, Mavs had a great day out, with Mavs I winning overall and Mavs II finishing third.
Mav Jacob Kirby was also in England U25 action this month as the Trailblazers took on Loughborough Lightning U23. This match was the curtain raiser to Lightning’s Superleague fixture against Strathclyde Sirens and it was a fantastic match up. Jacob had a good run out at both GA and WA and although the Trailblazers lost out by just one goal, scored in the final seconds, it was so good to see them all back on court for the first time since last year’s Singapore tournament.
And we closed out the month with a friendly against Surrey Hurricanes. As always, we had a fun time with our EMMNA neighbours and we were able to give our whole squad a run out. This match also saw the debut of youngster Evan Jones and he put in a brilliant performance that earned him Player of the Match. Get used to hearing Evan’s name…
And that’s not all…
We continued our winning ways in the Reading mixed league and we remain unbeaten with just a handful of matches to go in this season.
We had a wonderful time at our club photoshoot and social. More to come but thank you to Wallingford Rowing Club for hosting us and allowing Thames Mavericks to have a very suitable background for pics!
